60 Wrecks in Vendée and Charente-Maritime
60 Wrecks in Vendée and Charente-Maritime by Hervé Marsaud and Pascal Hénaff
Summary:
This is the first book published by Editions GAP dedicated to wreck diving on the Atlantic coast and more precisely off the Vendée and Charente coasts. For many divers, talking about diving north of the 44th parallel is pure fiction. However, even if the sun sometimes struggles to shine directly on the bottom beyond 80 m, many have been dazzled by the intoxicating visibility that can be had in summer on our wrecks.
The abundance of natural life adds to the supernatural atmosphere that reigns in these under-visited areas. About sixty wrecks are widely or just mentioned here. Some are unavoidable and others are less so, but all have a story to tell. Facts of war, storms, saved crews and more dramatic ends are recounted. The age of their structures also allows a journey through the history of the Navy.
This selection is intended to be as complete as possible for the area studied, but some wrecks still require further investigation. The work is not finished and this book is only an approach that other divers can complete. You are welcome to dive off the coast of the Vendée and Charente-Maritime to shatter your preconceived ideas about diving in emerald waters.
