Shearwater Petrel 3 recall, what you need to know!

OSeptember 12, 2024, Shearwater informed its dealers of a rare but serious problem concerning some of its Petrel 3 * All models dive controllers, monitors and computers.

A fault has been identified which could lead to an unexpected loss of power to the unit, and in very isolated cases, this failure could occur during a dive.

What about the risk?

Although the probability of this fault is extremely low, Shearwater, true to its commitment to safety and reliability, immediately implemented a series of improvements on the Petrel 3. The aim is to correct this problem for future units, but also to offer all current users a free upgrade. Preventive maintenance is crucial to ensure optimum performance and diver safety.

Impact on current orders

Until the improvements have been fully tested and implemented, Shearwater has decided to temporarily suspend production and sales of the Petrel 3. If you have placed an order or are considering doing so, please contact the Shearwater team at orders@shearwater.com for updated information on delivery times.

Can I continue to dive with my Petrel 3?

Shearwater strongly recommends that divers using a Petrel 3 have redundant systems and always be prepared in case of failure, a golden rule in technical diving. Technology, however reliable, is no substitute for a diver's experience, training and skills. So it's essential to maintain a proactive approach to safety and equipment maintenance. To minimize risk, Shearwater advises its users to send in their Petrel 3 for product improvement as soon as possible.

Focus on CCR divers

For rebreather users, it's important to note that the SOLO, the oxygen controller for rebreathers, continues to function even if the P3 loses power. In the event of failure, the SOLO automatically reverts to a low set point of 0.7 PP02, ensuring the necessary oxygen supply for the diver. The diver can then use a rescue monitor to manage the situation safely.

What's next?

Shearwater expects the new product improvement procedures to be ready by the end of September 2024. For customers wishing to have their Petrel 3 returned and checked, please contact us via our e-mail address to proceed with the RMA return.
