Several snorkel models are available on the market.
The simple snorkel
This type of snorkel has a reduced volume. It is widely used by freedivers and spearfishermen looking for a small volume of water to evacuate, or when freediving in a pool, for example, where there are no waves.
The purge snorkels
The purge snorkel is very practical and comfortable to use, as it greatly limits water ingress. Firstly, the head of the snorkel is protected to prevent water from entering. It also incorporates a purge valve at the base which automatically evacuates water and prevents it from entering.
To attach a snorkel to a scuba diving mask, spearfishing mask or freediving mask, snorkels feature a clip that passes through the mask strap. Some snorkels are equipped with a quick-release clip that makes it easy to detach the snorkel from the mask, while leaving a fixed part of the attachment on the mask.
